Midwest Living Facility Case Study

Midwest Living Facility Case Study

History

The customer is an assisted living facility providing residents with a safe and caring environment. They have limited IT expertise on staff but do require reliable services as their patient care applications are cloud-based. They also needed help managing the internet and phones for their residents, as they fluctuated vacancies and had to manage changing phone numbers and bills for vacant rooms. The added complexity of dealing with a not-so-tech-savvy population created additional administrative burdens for the facility. Lastly, they needed security cameras to monitor stairwells and entries to the building better, limiting liabilities.

The customer sought an “easy button” when managing their telecom, security, and cameras. They preferred to run all business through a single vendor to follow the “one throat to choke” mentality. We were able to vet several solutions on their behalf. We were ultimately chosen because we simplified their purchase decision while having CornerStone team members onsite for all product reviews, surveys, and installations.

Business Internet and Managed Firewall

The customer initially relied on business broadband sold as “fiber” but could not continue to suffer the regular outages associated with the best-effort service. Their patient management tools are cloud-based, meaning medical records would be unavailable, and patient care would suffer. CornerStone recommended and implemented a significantly more reliable dedicated internet service to address this issue.

When we first engaged the customer, they didn’t have a firewall. They relied on the modem provided by their cable company, which was identified as an immediate security risk. CornerStone worked to put together a packaged firewall solution that included regular updates and management. Fortunately, we could deliver this service at a rate below the customer’s current spending.

Resident Internet, TV, and Phone

The facility’s residents consistently move in and out, creating an administrative burden of managing each room’s internet, TV, and phone packages. When we were first introduced, the business needed help to juggle the residents’ needs. Some would sign up for services independently because they wanted more than the channel selection RetirmentHomeTV offered, but they would still ask the staff to support them.

With the voice services, reusing their phones for new residents became a challenge. The numbers stayed the same as one person moved out and another moved in, causing confusion when people called for former residents.

CornerStone worked with the local cable company to build a package for the customer, allowing significantly increased flexibility and simplified management of services on a per-room basis. The facility’s admin staff now have complete control over what is ordered, how and where it is billed, and how to manage the services for their residents. The residents were happier, the facility reduced administrative burden, and billing management was simplified.

Security Camera Installation and Management

For practical reasons, CornerStone urged the customer to review physical security services like cameras and door access control. They didn’t have an easy-to-manage or maintain solution in place—a few cameras were working, but nobody on staff knew how to access them, nor could they be accessed remotely if the empowered staff was offsite. The liability to the customer and the residents’ risk was the primary reason they agreed to deploy security cameras throughout the facility. Although door access control was considered, they weren’t ready to commit a budget to the project.

Working with the camera provider, CornerStone helped the customer identify the location of their current network cabling drops and the best locations for the new cameras. The vendor we brought in for the internet, firewall, and residents’ TV/internet/phone plans installed and managed the devices.
